1. WANT TO WORK IN FILM AND ENTERTAINMENT?

Holmesglen TAFE (Waverley campus) is offering a three-year Bachelor of Screen. The course is for those wanting to work in the film and entertainment industries, leading graduates to career opportunities including film maker, animator, screen writer, film editor, visual effects coordinator, cinematographer, production manager, sound design coordinator or animation director. The selection process requires applicants to have the VCE, to complete a Supplementary Application Form explaining why they want to do the course; applicants will need to complete a series of images telling a story (without words), and provide a short synopsis of a story line for a film. 3. CLASS BEGINS FOR DEAKIN UNI MEDICAL STUDENTS

Deakin has welcomed the first students to its new School of Medicine. The 120 graduate students will spend the first two years of the program at the Geelong (Waurn Ponds) campus. The last two years of the course will be completed in a range of hospitals, general practices and healthcare facilities attached to Deakin’s Clinical Schools in Geelong, Warrnambool, Ballarat and Box Hill. Graduating in 2011, they will assist in redressing medical shortages in rural and regional areas. The School will build up to 180 students per year from 2013.

4. INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) AS A CAREER

An educator at Swinburne TAFE told careers advisors at a recent conference that jobs for those with current IT skills are readily available, and demand for Swinburne graduates is high. They currently have difficulty finding graduates to fill vacancies offered by industry, while predicted demand in 2–4 years is far greater than Swinburne can possibly supply. Top growth technologies are: instant messaging, real time data warehousing, WiFi security, VOIP telephony, internal web services, grid computing, utility computing, policy based management, RFID tags and network security technologies. Sports medicine offers the chance to work with motivated athletes and sports teams from all walks of life and it sometimes gives the opportunity to travel with teams to events such as the Olympic and Commonwealth games. A careers evening is being held to introduce sports medicine to school students (sports physicians, physiotherapists, soft tissue therapists, dietitians, podiatrists and psychologists will give short talks). Year 12 students who plan to complete the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Science Admission Test (UMAT) can register for the test NOW at www.umatweb.acer.edu.au. Registrations close on Friday 6 June at 5pm. The test is for medicine, dentistry, oral health, optometry and some pharmacy and physiotherapy courses.
